Win a Date With David Chang

05.31.07

Anyone who's worked in a restaurant before can tell you that there exist many chef groupies, people who have an undying attraction to chefs and chefiness. The problem with being a chef groupie is that it takes a lot of energy—scoring hard-to-get reservations, lingering around kitchens as they close, finding out which bars chefs hang out in after work, etc. If you don't have time for that sort of nonsense, but still want to bask in the musk and glory of some of New York's top culinary talent (and support a good cause while you're doing it), the French Culinary Institute is hosting New York's first ever chef auction on June 11th, where for the right price you can score a date with the cooking elite. All of the proceeds from the event go to support Friends of the FCI, the non-profit arm of the school, which helps provide scholarships and financial support for in-need students. The chefs that are being auctioned aren't just namby-pamby line cooks, either. FCI has been the breeding ground for many of the city's best chefs, so it's no surprise that alumni such as Wylie Dufresne and David Chang are involved. Which is to say nothing of culinary legends such as Andre Soltner and Alain Sailhac. So, if you're interested in a trip to the Greenmarket with Dan Barber (and dinner at Blue Hill afterwards), or a private sushi dinner with Jean-Georges at his "favorite sushi restaurant" (something tells me it won't be here) get over to FCI. Tickets are $250, include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, and, to reiterate, go to support a great cause. My only question is why they weren't interested in auctioning off a date with an alum that blogs for Gourmet (ahem).
