The 53 Best Things We Ate This Year

What do you get when you ask food-crazy editors and writers, restaurateurs like Danny Meyer, chefs such as John Besh and Nick Anderer, and celebs like Julia Stiles to name the single best thing they ate in 2012? A lot of good stuff. More specifically, 53 inspired choices—photos included. There are fancy foods, to be sure—caviar and Wagyu beef at Le Bernardin, chestnut ravioli from Eataly, "Heaven and Earth" at Hix Soho in London, and teppan-grilled prawns at Go in Tokyo's Palace Hotel. But more often than not, our contributors and colleagues named simpler fare, albeit in some tempting locales—banana pancakes in Maui or, yes, potato chips in Provence. From the Kobe beef at Masa to homemade chocolate-pecan pie (recipe included), pizza, and lots of barbecue (in North Carolina, Texas, and Colorado), our survey of the tastiest, most memorable meals of 2012 ranges from high end to humble and spans the globe. Dig right into our slideshow with chef Hugh Acheson's pick from Chicago's Au Cheval, which proves that even a bologna sandwich can be transcendent when it's cooked with love…and topped with an egg.
