Tequila por mi Amante

The Way We Cooked: Vintage Gourmet

September 1942

Tequila por mi Amante means "Tequila for You Know What We Mentioned Above." At first blush this sounds like a ghoulish sort of witch milk, but actually it is an exotic that warrants a bit of research into other fruits. To 1 quart washed and stemmed sun-ripened strawberries, cut in half add 1 pint good tequila. Turn this mixture into a mason jar, add 4 teaspoons sugar, cap, shake, and let stand for exactly 21 days, and dont ask me why! Your hardier native drinks this potion strained, straight, and unchilled. We suggest using about 3 ounces in a big Collins glass, with the juice of 1 small lime, ice, and soda.

This exclusive recipe is pulled directly from Gourmet's archive. It has not been re-tested by our food editors since it was published in the magazine, but it's a pretty good indication of the kinds of things we once cooked—and ate—with great pleasure.
