WHAT’S THE BIG WOW?
Just walking into the lobby will make you feel cool. The hotel has a modern look with lots of bold
artwork against dark walls for drama, and it is flanked on both sides by restaurants.
Bo, Lucia’s Asian-fusion “restobar,” was packed at night with nuzzling couples.
Typhoon, the hotel’s main dining spot, is a pulsing Thai joint. Rooms are
nicely furnished with very comfortable beds, although my room lacked a comfy
chair and good lighting for reading.
LIKED BEST:
The back wall in the
lobby, the hallways, and guest rooms all are hung with wonderful
black-and-white photos by David Hume Kennerly.
LIKED LEAST:
Room service is really
expensive. Breakfast for two was nothing special, and it still cost $31. Better
to walk a few blocks to one of the three neighborhood cafes—the Black
Rooster, Stumptown or Peets cafes for delicious coffee and breakfast at a
fraction of the hotel’s check.
WHO SHOULD STAY HERE?
Those folks who want
their luxury with a sharp edge and a convenient location.
WOULD I GO BACK?
The hotel was
comfortable with a pleasant and helpful staff, and the $180-a-night price tag
was reasonable enough. Still, Portland has a few other hotels in this area that
I would be interested in trying before returning to this sleek spot.
