Chill in Seville with an Afternoon Siesta

07.27.07

If you've ever spent time in Andalusia during the summer, you know about the flama, a heat so scorching it threatens to turn to dust anyone so foolish as to, say, cross an unshaded street. The flama keeps the wise and the prudent indoors during the afternoon, which in Spain stretches from about 2 until around 7. When I lived in Cordoba, I dreaded the flama, and on those afternoons when I had no choice but to walk to school after lunch, I would skirt any sunny area as if a living beast, given to mauling the innocent, lurked in the sunlight. The flama is also torture for tourists, who can't really move about on these hot afternoons. Luckily, the restaurants and hotels of Seville have come up with a solution. From now until the end of September, visitors can escape the flama with a new package deal that buys them lunch at a local restaurant and a siesta at a nearby hotel afterwards. Nappers have to clear out of their afternoon digs by 7 p.m. but by then the flama is starting to retreat, and it's safe to slip outside for a quick visit to the Giralda.
