Cocktail of the Week: Creole Watermelon Cocktail

08.24.09

Scott Beattie’s excellent Artisanal Cocktails is organized by season, and nothing fits late summer better than this delicious and (for Beattie) easy-to-make cocktail. You’ll only need a small amount of watermelon, but leftover watermelon is never a problem.

1 ripe red watermelon
Chili powder
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice, plus more for sprinkling on watermelon triangle garnish
1 1/2 ounces vodka
Salt

With a small knife, cut a 3- by 1-inch triangle from the watermelon to use as a garnish. Set aside.

Using a melon ball scooper, scoop out 3/4 cup watermelon. Place watermelon in a cocktail shaker and add dash of chili powder and 1/2 ounce lime juice. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, mash watermelon mixture to release the juices. Add vodka and fill shaker with ice. Shake until chilled and strain into a Martini glass. Sprinkle watermelon triangle with chili powder, salt and a dash of lime juice. Spear it onto the side of the glass. Season cocktail with salt, if desired. Serves 1.
