Cocktail of the Week: Rusty Nail

The tradition of having the kids mix the drinks seems to have disappeared a few decades back, but here’s a cocktail that’s so simple a six year old could whip one up for Father’s Day (June 21; in Australia and New Zealand it’s celebrated the first Sunday in September). Some recipes call for a jigger of Scotch with a float of Drambuie (a Scotch liqueur sweetened with honey), but we prefer it well-mixed and well-chilled. Heresy alert: We’ve been known to shake this one even though that goes against the general rule of stirring drinks that are made only of spirits. Like many cocktails, the Rusty Nail has grown drier over time. Kind of like dear old Dad.

In a shaker 3/4 full of ice combine 2 ounces blended Scotch and 1/2 ounce Drambuie. Stir well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
