If you don’t know the name, despite Jenkins’s filmography, this might clue you in: He played the deceased father on the popular HBO show Six Feet Under. He’s been around for a while, but only recently (with his nomination for The Visitor) has he been getting the attention he deserves, rather like a whiskey sour. The cocktail is typically made with lemon juice, but Woodford Reserve bourbon—crafted in one of America’s oldest bourbon distilleries—muddled lime, and a few dashes of bitters give this drink its own personality. The addition of egg white is also enjoying a renaissance, and the result is a pleasantly frothy, well-balanced drink that isn’t completely new but is nonetheless stunning.
3 thin lime slices
2 tsp superfine granulated sugar
1/2 oz water (1 Tbsp)
2 oz (1/4 cup) Woodford Reserve or other small-batch bourbon
1 large egg white
Angostura bitters
• Using a muddler or a long-handled spoon, muddle lime slices with sugar and water in a cocktail shaker. Add bourbon and egg white and fill shaker three fourths full of ice. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds, then strain into an 8-oz Old-Fashioned glass and top with a few dashes of bitters.
COOKS’ NOTE: The egg white in this recipe is not cooked.
