February 2009
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Anne Hathaway (nominated for her role in Rachel Getting Married) mentioned her preference for a particular version of Margarita, so tequila is the starting point for this cocktail. From The Princess Diaries to The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway’s characters tend to walk a line between femininity and tomboyishness. Served in a Martini glass with a twist, the Anne Hathaway presents itself as elegant yet unfussy.
4 oz (1/2 cup) fresh ruby red grapefruit juice
Granulated sugar for coating rim of glass
1 tsp superfine granulated sugar
1 oz (2 Tbsp) silver tequila
1/2 oz (1 Tbsp) Campari
GARNISH: a grapefruit twist
• Rub rim of a Martini glass with a small piece of grapefruit (left over after juicing the fruit) and dip in granulated sugar to coat. Chill glass while making drink.
• Whisk together grapefruit juice and superfine sugar in a small bowl until sugar has dissolved. Add juice, tequila, and Campari to a cocktail shaker three fourths full of ice cubes. Shake for 10 seconds, then strain into Martini glass.
