Tequila Sunrise

August 1981
The original version of this drink, as prepared in Tijuana in the 1920s, was considerably more complicated. When it came north after Prohibition, the recipe was simplified because some of the ingredients weren’t readily available. There’s nothing quite like the color explosion caused by the slow descent of the grenadine through the other liquids.

Half fill a 12-ounce glass with cracked ice, add 1/2 cup orange juice, 2 ponies (2 ounces) tequila, and lime juice to taste, and stir the drink well. Drizzle 1 teaspoon grenadine over the drink, but do not stir it, and garnish the drink with a slice of lime. Makes 1 drink.
