Jack Rose Cocktail

Makes1 drink
January 1946
The heart of David A. Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (1948) is a chapter entitled “Six Basic Cocktails.” They are: Martini, Manhattan, Old-Fashioned, Daiquiri, Side Car, and Jack Rose. Though it is the least known, the Jack Rose is every bit as delicious as its more-common brethren. Whether it’s really named for the hairless gambler who ratted out his police-officer co-conspirator in the murder of a rival gambler is less certain. Somehow the more likely explanation seems to be the fact that its main ingredient is applejack and it has a rosy hue from grenadine.

In a mixing glass combine 1 1/2 ounces applejack, 1/2 ounce grenadine, and the juice of 1/2 lime. Shake fast and furiously with much cracked ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
