The Other Niagara

continued (page 3 of 3)

Inn on the Twenty (Jordan; 800-701-8074; innonthetwenty.com; from $180) promises the lap of luxury and delivers. One of the most sought-after rooms is the Rittenhouse Suite ($242), with a vast bathroom and a private garden. A new, expertly staffed spa is the latest addition here.

Lakewinds Country Manor (Niagara-on-the-Lake; 866-338-1888; lakewinds.ca; from $145) is a particularly welcoming B&B, with antiques-filled rooms and a deliciously formal breakfast.

The Prince of Wales Hotel (Niagara-on-the-Lake; 888-669-5566; vintageinns.com; from $181) has been restored to its Victorian splendor and also has a spa and an indoor pool.

Eating There

Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery (1469 Pelham Road, St. Catharines; 905-684-8423) has great sandwiches and a huge selection of cheeses.

Hillebrand Estates Winery Restaurant (1249 Niagara Stone Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 800-582-8412) sources exceptional game meats from nearby Lake Land Game Meats. There are outdoor tables, and the dinner tasting menu is laden with local products.

Mark Picone @ Vineland Estates Winery (3620 Moyer Road, Vineland; 888-846-3526) is set in a cluster of early-1800s buildings with stunning vineyard views. Chef Mark Picone provides the deliciously idiosyncratic Niagara cuisine.

On the Twenty (3836 Main Street, Jordan; 800-701-8074) showcases regional produce in an elegant setting with a wine list that dares to venture beyond the downstairs barrel room.

Peller Estates (290 John Street East, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 888-673-5537) offers a dazzling lunch—the quichelike tarts are irresistible—from new chef Jason Parsons.

Zooma Zooma Cafe (3839 Main Street, Jordan; 905-562-6280), across the road from On the Twenty, is a cheerful little place with live music and hearty sandwiches.

Being There

The Good Earth Cooking School (4556 Lincoln Avenue, Beamsville; 800-308-5124; goodearthcooking.com), in a cottage surrounded by fruit orchards, is a sophisticated …operation, with classes, held outside in the herb garden, and an occasional wild-food-foraging expedition onto the escarpment.

Grimo Nut Nursery (979 Lakeshore Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 905-934-6887) sells nuts and nut trees while providing self-guided tours that explore nut cultivation.

Lakeshore Antiques & Treasures (855 Lakeshore Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 905-646-1965) is a huge warren of an antiques mall, filled with unusual items.

Niagara Herb Farm (1177 York Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 905-262-5690) is a ten-minute drive from the center of town.

Niagara Presents (4516 Mountainview Road, Beamsville; 888-584-2387; niagarapresents.net) started out as a rentable kitchen where farmers’ wives could make their own jams, jellies, chutneys, and relishes in commercially viable quantities. The best of them are for sale in the store, individually or packaged as gift baskets.

Steve Bauer Bike Tours (4979 King Street, Beamsville; 905-563-8687; stevebauer.com) is run by the former Canadian cycling champion. A great way to see the region.

Walker’s Country Market (15796 Niagara Parkway, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 905-468-2767) sells fresh fruits and jams, and the sandwiches and salads made on the premises are ideal for a picnic lunch in one of the area’s scenic spots.

Wyndym Farm (1133 Concession 2, Niagara-on-the-Lake; 905-468-0251) sells a wide range of heirloom tomatoes and other “obsolete” vegetables.
