No More Rubber Chickens

12.20.06

Bad news for those of you who have ever wondered if meat labeled "organic" on a menu really is. Fashionable Julie's, in Holland Park, became the first-ever U.K. establishment to be prosecuted for organic food fraud, after it falsely claimed that its marinated roast chicken, sausages, and spice-crusted rack of lamb were organic. The restaurant was caught in a routine inspection by the Environmental Health Office, which realized that none of the delivery invoices identified the meats as organic. This type of fraud has a financial payoff: In just 52 days, the restaurant saved $8,000 by purchasing nonorganic chicken alone.
