Before Julia Child could bring French cuisine into American kitchens, she had to bring it into her own, by shopping the markets and learning from the best artisans. Here, in this exclusive silent montage from WGBH's archives, we glimpse Julia on one of her frequent trips to France during the 1970s for her seminal TV series The French Chef. As was her custom, we see her shopping at an open-air market, conferring with a baker, and visiting a butcher shop in such cities as Rouen, Paris, Grasse, and Cannes.
