Key Notes: Le Placide, Paris

10.12.07
A Left Bank boutique, right next to the city’s best food market.

WHAT’S THE BIG WOW?

The location. This new Left Bank boutique hotel, designed by Bruno Borrione, of the Philippe Starck design firm, is set in a former 19th century private house in the 6th Arrondissement — right next door to Le Bon Marché department store, known for the city’s largest food market, La Grande Épicerie, where you can find just about everything from pain au raisin and fabulous fromage to olive oils, sushi, and pasta. With only 11 rooms (two per floor), and brand-new fixtures, makes you feel as though you’re visiting an especially stylish friend’s house in Paris.

LIKED BEST

The young attractive, multilingual staff were eager to please and up to any challenge. One staff member managed the multiple roles of concierge, bellman, front desk, and even chef. Enthusiastic to be part of our Parisian adventure, the concierge magically secured restaurant reservations for the most coveted tables in Paris, corresponding with us by email before our arrival, and confirming and printing out maps each day for our dining destinations. Each room was equipped with a flat-screen TV, DVD/CD-player, iPod dock speaker system, and luxurious bedding with high-thread count sheets and a down comforter, in addition to the usual trappings. Natural sunlight streamed in through windows in both the bedroom and the huge new bathroom, which was outfitted with sleek chrome fixtures, Molton Brown bath products, and plush bathrobes and slippers.

LIKED LEAST

There was one surprise at this hotel: the brand-new bathroom had a large bathtub with a shower handle, but lacked a hook on which to hang the shower head — making baths the only convenient option.

WHO SHOULD STAY THERE?

Travelers who prefer a smaller, more modern hotel. Serious shoppers who want access to the chic Boulevard Saint-Germain and Rue des Grenelles boutiques, not to mention the Bon Marché.

WOULD YOU GO BACK?

Bien sûr! The energetic staff could not have been nicer, and they helped make our stay truly memororable.
