A Guide to French Food Guides

06.08.07

Though the Michelin Guides (now with an English edition for the first time) remains a national bestseller, the French are increasingly plumping for other guides and websites when looking for great new restaurants during their travels. Except for Pudlo Paris (whose 2007-2008 edition has also come out in English), the remaining guides and websites are in French, but even if you don't speak the language, they're great places to find those addresses that may have escaped the lofty attentions of Bibendum, the pneumatic emblem of Michelin who also represents the French food establishment. Pudlo Paris, an annual guide by French food critic Gilles Pudlowski, (who does a weekly column in the national magazine Le Point), is probably the most comprehensive food guide to Paris, and Pudlowski also does an annual national guide, Pudlo France, which is generally reliable. The French magazine Nouvel Observateur publishes an annual restaurant guide by the team of young journalists led by restaurant critic Alexandre Cammas, who also launched a movement called "Le Fooding" several years ago to give a voice to a new generation of food critics; its suggestions are generally excellent. The edgiest food guide in France right now is Les 150 Tables de la Jeune Cuisine, which is run by the collective of young journalists who does the monthly newspaper Ominvore and is a terrific resource for anyone who's really interested in discovering the hottest young French chefs.
