Thinking Inside the Box

02.04.07

Melbourne's bar owners are an enterprising lot. Famed for their willingness to exploit any basement, any poky attic, any dingy duck-fat-stained Chinatown alley in the name of a more exclusive, secretive address (and cheaper rents), they're created a warren of speakeasies and backdoor gin joints that have brought the city to life. But the latest hot spot goes one better in the ingenuity stakes: Section 8 (27-29 Tattersalls Lane, Melbourne) has leased some spaces in a Chinatown parking lot and set up a bar entirely within a shipping container, doing coffee by day and drinks by night. It's pop-up retailing gone mad. And we love it.
