The Right Side of Shangri-La

You'd think a beach resort would trumpet a massive renovation that included a new lobby, an exclusive new wing, a spa, a second pool, and complimentary tea and cocktails. But unless you're in the know, you may book a room at the newly reopened Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, in Penang, without ever realizing how far the place has come. It's the all-new Rasa Wing (shown here) you want; its deluxe rooms include private patios facing the sea. Pay $40 extra for a premier room in this wing, and you'll get an herbal bathon the balcony. Book a room in the older Garden Wing (which had only a facelift), and you'll miss out entirely.

But they don't tell you that unless you ask.

You will, however, eat well no matter where you sleep. Rates include a breakfast buffet so monumental it will change your idea of resort food forever. If you're not satiated after diving into the pastry bar, noodle bar, cereal bar, dhal and mutton curries, sashimi plates, cheese platters, fresh fruits, green salads, sausages and waffles, sauteed potatoes, dairy counter, cold cuts, salmon, Asian soups, and bacon-wrapped sausages in pandanus leaves, don't worry. There's even more to eat at dinner.
