Eliminating the Problem

Toilets are a big issue in Asian travel. I’ve taken to rating them. Tibet tops the list for scary but beautiful: a cliffside monastery with a wobbly wooden shed, no roof, hanging over a precipice 13,000 feet high, floor boards a foot apart. Nothing but air between your rump and the valley below. Try it in the middle of the night. It’s no surprise, then, that sanitation is the talk of the town this month as delegations from nearly 20 countries gather in Bangkok for the World Toilet Expo 2006. The theme is "Happy Toilet, Healthy Life," and the goal is to raise at least 60 percent of public toilets to international standards by next year.
