Talk About Slipping on a Banana Peel

11.12.07

Last week a California jury found that Dole Food Co. and Dow Chemical Co. must pay $3.29 million for causing the sterility of six out of 12 Nicaraguan banana plantation workers who were plaintiffs in the lawsuit, according to Bloomberg News. Lawyers claimed that the farmhands, employees of Dole, became sterile after exposure to a now-banned pesticide called dibromochloropropane, made by Dow.

In reaction to the verdict (which is expected to be appealed) one Dow lawyer was quoted by Bloomberg as saying, "Dow Chemical is pleased that this jury concluded that six out of 12 plaintiffs were entitled to no recovery whatsoever."

I guess you could call that looking on the bright side.
