Politics of the Plate: Consumer Protection?

10.29.07

Last week the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture ordered dairies in the state to remove certain language from their labels by January 1, 2008. Among the terms deemed too offensive for the public to see on a milk jug: "antibiotic-free," "pesticide-free," and any mention that no artificial growth hormones were given to cows that produced the milk—even if such claims are true.

Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff told the Philadelphia Inquirer that such descriptions are misleading because no milk in the state contains pesticides and antibiotics and that there is no way to distinguish natural growth hormones from synthetic ones in milk.

That may be true. But with all due respect, Mr. Secretary, don't the citizens of your state have the right to know what goes into the making of their milk?
