Seeing Stars

11.14.06

I just finished reading an article in the New York Times about Hannaford Bros., a New England grocery-store chain that has begun a system for rating the nutritional content of foods in its stores. I think they should be commended. The rating serves to combat the onslaught of hyperbolic health claims about many prepared foods. As it turns out, many foods are marketed as healthy by touting one or two positive attributes but are still chock-full of sodium or sugar or some other "bad" thing. It’s no surprise that the majority of the foods that earned three stars are fresh fruits and vegetables. Hannaford Bros. is not releasing any info about whether shopper habits have changed, but I, for one, am hoping against hope that they have.
