It’s getting close to teatime. “Do you want some gum?” she offers, holding out something layered red and yellow. “They’re delicious, like little gum sandwiches.”

I offer to crash the carrot cake party. “You want my tea cakes,” she says. “Get in line. That’s probably going to be on the cover or the headline now. ‘Scarlett Johansson: Everyone Wants My Tea Cakes.’”

I walk her to her car. So no teacakes. What should we lead with?

Just don’t make me sound like I’m obsessed with bloody goiters, she says.

It’s that or homemade bagels, I offer.

“Okay, let’s go with bagels.”
