Tri-City Sandwich Sweepstakes

03.03.07
panini

New York has The Spotted Pig's pulled Berkshire pork with melted Gruyere and pickled jalapeños. London has St. John Bread's smoked Gloucester Old Spot bacon with ketchup. But Sydney more than holds its own in the sandwich stakes, most notably of late with the roast pork, mustard, and caramelized onion—all on panini at the new cafe, Sopra. The cafe sits above Fratelli Fresh (in Italian, sopra means "upstairs"), the retail arm of one of Sydney's premier food wholesalers. In addition to a great sandwich, chef Andy Bunn has a gift for sublimely simple, genuinely produce-driven dishes. His English background, meanwhile, means that the mostly Italian blackboard menu also features dishes such as Eton mess, salad cream, and—that old Italian favorite—osso buco with a side of chips.
