Cocktail of the Week: Candle in the Wind

08.03.09

The world awoke on August 5, 1962 to the shocking news that Marilyn Monroe was dead. She was only 36, but she’d come a long way from the aspiring starlet who agreed to be named “Artichoke Queen” as a publicity stunt. Her impact on popular culture is immeasurable, so in honor of the bittersweet and far-too-short life she lived, here’s a cocktail using Cynar, an artichoke-based amaro.

In a rocks glass three-fourths full of ice, combine 1 1/2 oz gin, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 1/2 ounce Cynar. Stir well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with a flamed orange peel.
